Bungalows are a bigger part of the housing mix in Herne Bay than in most Kent towns. The resort grew through the late Victorian period and then spread into the suburbs between the wars, when the bungalow became the fashionable seaside house, so the town now holds Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the front, streets of interwar single-storey property behind them and later development beyond. Bungalow roofs bring shallow hips, long low elevations and a high proportion of flat-roofed extensions, all of which are more sensitive to standing water and lifting edges than a steep two-storey roof.
