Kent's first conservation area was designated here in 1968, and the streets behind Deal's seafront still hold eighteenth-century houses with a scattering of seventeenth-century timber-framed cottages among them. Georgian terraces of that type frequently sit behind parapets with concealed gutters and valleys, which is where trouble usually starts, because a blockage there empties into the building rather than over the front elevation. Towards the castle the stock shifts to grander Victorian villas with slate and more elaborate roof shapes. All of it stands a few yards from a shingle beach, so salt and onshore wind work on lead, fixings and mortar the whole year round.
