Very little historic roofscape survives here. Most of Swanley's housing went up between the post-war years and the late 1980s, and the Victorian buildings that once stood at its centre were cleared to make way for a new town centre, so what remains is overwhelmingly twentieth-century. In practice that means concrete interlocking tile on relatively shallow pitches, mortar-bedded ridges and verges now reaching the end of their service life, and a very high proportion of flat roofs over garages, porches, dormers and rear extensions. Flat roofs are where most callouts in the town originate, and the usual cause is a fall that no longer drains rather than a covering that has simply worn out.
