Along and behind the High Street the foundation work is small and careful: bases under new structural openings, underpinning support, and pads in period and conservation-area property where a protected frontage limits what can be disturbed and the trench is usually dug by hand.

In Chatham the gradient is on the street the trench is on. In Rochester it is on the approach as well, so a vehicle can be committed to a hill before anyone has looked at the excavation.
