Margate’s pumping case is density rather than gradient, and that is what separates it from Ramsgate along the same coast. Terraced streets are tightly packed and parked on both sides, the Old Town is narrower again, and the seafront carries its own restrictions on where and when a vehicle can be.
The result is a frontage that a vehicle cannot stand alongside at all, with a floor, a base or a yard slab behind it that has to be placed continuously. Setting a pump up on a Margate street
A boom pump needs firm, level ground that will carry it on its outriggers, room to deploy them fully, which is wider than the vehicle, clear space for a mixer to reverse to the hopper, and overhead clearance, with power lines treated as an absolute exclusion. On most of these streets the outrigger footprint alone rules it out, so the practical machine is a line pump.
Two conditions then govern the job. The machine still needs somewhere legal and firm to sit, and the mixer feeding it needs to reach the hopper, which on a parked terraced street is a separate problem from the hose route and has to be solved at the same time.
And washout has to be arranged. Concrete washout is strongly alkaline and is a pollutant, so it must not enter a surface water drain, a watercourse or a highway gully. On a seafront street with gullies along the kerb, a contained washout point agreed with the operator before work starts is not optional.
