Rochester’s pumping case is the climb. Level is the difficulty on the hill and room is the difficulty in the centre, so the machine choice usually resolves to a line pump for anything domestic and a boom only on the riverside sites.

The approach decision matters more here than in most towns because it applies to the mixers as well as the machine. Which of the two crossings the vehicles take settles the whole approach, and a pump job needs mixers cycling to the hopper rather than one lorry arriving once, so getting the route wrong multiplies rather than adds.
