About Hythe
Hythe changes completely within a mile of the high street. One way it climbs, narrows and runs out of standing room. The other way it opens onto single-track marsh roads and smallholdings. Period property one way, smallholdings the other
Along and above the high street the stock is period, tightly packed and largely built before vehicle access was a design consideration. The work is small: floor pours, courtyard and garden slabs, base work for outbuildings, and reinstatement inside older buildings.
Out towards the marsh the work is rural. Smallholdings, stables and field shelters generate hardstandings, machinery and feed bases, stable floors and gateway repairs. Different customers, different volumes, and a completely different conversation about access.
A climb one way, single-track roads the other
Going up from the seafront and the canal towards the old town, the climb is steep and the lanes above the high street are narrow. Standing room is limited and a large vehicle that commits to one of those lanes has few options if it turns out there is nowhere to discharge.
Going the other way, width stops being the issue and the road surface and passing places take over. Single-track marsh roads take a vehicle in, but they take it in slowly, and a fully loaded lorry needs somewhere to stand on firm ground once it arrives at a smallholding rather than on a soft verge.
Mini-mix answers both halves more often than not, for opposite reasons: in the old town because it is smaller, and on the marsh because it is more manoeuvrable on a lane with passing places.
