White weatherboarded fishermen's cottages are what Whitstable is known for, and the town conservation area designated in 1969 protects a notable concentration of listed buildings among them. Some of those cottages carry half-hipped and mansard roofs, which are more complicated to repair than they look and unforgiving of a covering laid at the wrong pitch. The old fishing quarter is tightly built, with narrow alleys running down towards the beach, so access and scaffolding need working out before a date is offered rather than after. Facing north across the Thames estuary, seafront property takes salt and onshore wind directly, which shortens the life of nails, clips and lead.
