The railway arrived in 1842 to carry hops and fruit up to London, and Paddock Wood grew around it, so unlike most Kent towns there is very little here that predates the nineteenth century. The housing is largely late Victorian onwards, with a strong showing of post-war and modern estate property under concrete interlocking tile, where the common faults are cracked or slipped tiles, loose dry verges and shallow pitches over porches, bays and garages. Surrounding the town is the farmland that made it, and with it the oast houses whose conical roofs need peg tile and a specialist eye rather than a general repair. Being inland and low-lying in the Weald, this is not a wind-exposed place but it is a damp one, and moss on shaded slopes and blocked gutters cause more trouble than gales do.
