Royal Tunbridge Wells developed as a Georgian and Victorian spa town, and the Calverley estate laid out by Decimus Burton between 1828 and 1839 still stands as a listed group near its centre. Around it are conservation areas and a large stock of substantial Victorian villas with natural slate, deep pitches and complicated valley and dormer arrangements. Wealden building tradition runs strongly here too, so tile hanging, weatherboarding, local sandstone and handmade brick are all expected materials in the protected areas, and replacements are judged on whether they match. This is not a town where a covering can simply be swapped for whatever is cheapest, and consent is worth checking before work that alters an elevation.
