Concrete driveways in Chatham

On the hillsides at Luton and Wayfield a drive is usually a small, hard-won piece of ground: a single parking space cut into a front garden, a ramp down to a garage under the house, or a hardstanding where a wall has come out. The areas are small and the gradients are not.

Two things make a Chatham hillside drive harder than the area suggests. A drive that falls away needs its surface texture taken seriously, because a brushed or tamped finish gives grip and a smooth or power-floated surface is dangerously slippery outdoors in the wet. On a level suburban drive that is a preference. On a ramp down to a garage it is not.

Then there is the delivery. The street is narrow, one-way and parked both sides, and a fully loaded mixer has to hold the slope while it discharges. Since the vehicle cannot stand on the drive it is laying, it is standing on a street that already had nowhere to put it.

Mini-mix finds more legal and safe positions on a hill, and a small drive rarely needs a full load anyway. Where the drive is below the road, or round the side of the house, a line pump puts the concrete at the far end and lets the work come back towards the kerb rather than run away from it.
