Ready-mix concrete for floors in Ramsgate

If you are converting a Ramsgate basement or lower ground floor, you are pouring concrete below the level the lorry is standing at, with a light well in between. Kent Readymix arranges ready-mix concrete for floors across Ramsgate, and that is the town's most common floor job.

Floors below pavement level

Ramsgate’s Regency and early Victorian terraces have a basement storey more often than not, which gives this town a floor market most of Kent does not have. Basement and lower ground floors formed or re-laid as habitable space, cellar floors made good, and ground floors replaced above them as a building is converted between flats and houses.

On the Manston side and around the harbour the same service is ordinary commercial work: unit and workshop floors on flat ground where a vehicle reaches the opening and successive loads can queue.

Getting a floor in below the pavement, past the light well

Two obstacles arrive together. The first is the void: where a terrace has a basement area at the front there is an open, usually railed gap between kerb and building, and a chute runs concrete in a straight line under gravity and does not cross it. The second is level, because the floor is below the vehicle rather than beside it.

Barrowing is a poor answer to both. The route goes round the void, through the building and down a staircase, and a floor placed that way is placed in instalments, which is how a joint ends up in the middle of a slab that should be one piece.

A line pump answers it directly. It crosses the void, goes over the railings, drops through an opening or a window and places concrete at the far corner of the floor at a controlled rate. Gradient is the third layer: the harbour ramps are steep and the crescents are narrow, so the standing position is checked for slope before anything is booked.
