Crossing the gap at the front of a terrace
This is the clearest domestic pumping case anywhere in Kent, and it is structural rather than circumstantial. The Regency and early Victorian terraces were built with a basement storey, an open area at the front and usually railings across it. Between the kerb and the building there is a gap that no chute crosses and that a barrow has to go round or through the property to avoid.
A line pump crosses it directly. Hose goes over the railings, down into the area or through an opening, and places concrete into a basement floor, a lower ground slab or a rear yard reached through the building, at a controlled rate and without stopping.
On the Manston side and around the harbour the case is the ordinary commercial one, reach and continuity across an open plot.
Setting a pump up on a Ramsgate crescent
A boom pump needs firm, level ground that will carry it on its outriggers, room to deploy them fully, which is wider than the vehicle, clear space for a mixer to reverse to the hopper, and overhead clearance, with power lines treated as an absolute exclusion.
