University and hospital campuses order proper commercial foundations: pads under new buildings, plinths for plant, and bases for external structures, on sites with construction access and a specification that names the designation and the sulfate class.
On the Sturry side and the southern fringes it is domestic and small-developer work, strip footings and trench fill for houses, extensions and garages against a depth building control has agreed.
Inside the walls the same service means small structural bases and underpinning support in period and listed property, in trenches dug by hand because nothing else fits.
A trench pour inside a timed pedestrian zone
The walled centre operates a timed, bollarded pedestrian zone. A vehicle either arrives inside the permitted window or it does not arrive, and around that the medieval lanes are narrow, several are one-way, and conservation constraints limit where a vehicle can stand and for how long.
A trench is a poor fit for that. It cannot be part filled and left, and it takes more concrete than the drawing says once it has stood open, so a load sized to the window may not be sized to the trench.
The workable answers are a mini-mix vehicle, which occupies less kerb for less time and can return, or a line pump run from a permitted standing position outside the restriction so the concrete travels and the lorry does not. A boom pump rarely finds room to set up in the lanes. On the campuses and the fringes access is ordinary commercial access and a full mixer reaches the trench.
