Concrete for footings and foundations in Ramsgate

Ramsgate’s Regency and early Victorian stock gives its foundation work an unusual shape. Much of it is at or below pavement level: bases in basement and lower ground rooms, pads under new structural openings, and support work where a terrace is being converted back from flats or into them.

The harbour and the industrial land on the Manston side are the counterweight, with pad and strip foundations for units, plinths for plant and yard structure bases on ground that takes a full load anywhere on it.

The specific fact is a void. Where a terrace has a basement area at the front there is an open gap between kerb and building, usually railed, and a chute runs concrete in a straight line under gravity and does not cross it. A barrow has to go round or through, which on a cliff-top crescent can mean a long way.

For a footing that matters more than for a surface pour, because the concrete is going below the level the vehicle is standing at, and the only alternatives are lowering it in stages or moving the vehicle somewhere it cannot go.

A line pump answers it directly. It crosses the void, goes over the railings, drops into the excavation and keeps the pour continuous, which a trench needs because a cold joint in a footing is in the worst possible place. Gradient is the second layer: the ramps down to the Royal Harbour are steep and the crescents are narrow, so the standing position is checked for slope before anything is booked.
