The bulk of Tonbridge foundation work sits on Victorian and Edwardian plots: rear extension trenches, garage and outbuilding footings, and porch and bay bases, on gardens with mature boundaries and a route to the back that is often narrow.

Off the High Street, the Victorian streets running away from it are narrow, so the standing position is agreed in advance rather than found on arrival. Where the trench is at the back of a deep plot, a line pump removes the barrow run, and where the pour is large enough to need more than one load, the sequence is worth agreeing rather than assuming, because the second load takes the same route as the first.
