If the trench is above, the chute does not reach it.
That is why pumping does more work on Dover foundations than the volumes suggest. A pump lets the lorry stand where it is safe and delivers into the trench at a rate the people placing it can control, and it removes the barrow run up or down a slope that is the alternative.
