Kentish ragstone and peg-tiled cottages are characteristic of Maidstone and the villages around it, and ragstone has been quarried here since Roman times. In the older parts of the county town that means solid stone walls carrying handmade clay tile, where roof planes sag gently with age and any replacement has to be matched for camber and colour rather than bought new. The wider town is a different proposition: Victorian terraces near the centre, large interwar and post-war suburbs and a good deal of recent estate building, most of it under concrete interlocking tile. Converted oasts in the surrounding villages add conical and pyramidal roofs that few contractors handle regularly.
