Almost every property in Thanet is within a couple of miles of the sea, and that single fact governs roofing across the district. There are dozens of conservation areas and several thousand listed buildings between Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and the villages around them, so much of the stock is Georgian, Regency or Victorian resort building with slate, parapets and concealed gutters. There is very little tree cover and almost no shelter anywhere on the isle, which makes wind uplift and salt corrosion the two problems that recur regardless of which town a roof is in. Fixings, lead and mortar do not last as long here, and inland Kent practice does not transfer without adjustment.
